WhatsApp formatting cheat sheet

  • Bold: put an asterisk on both sides — *text*
  • Italic: put an underscore on both sides — _text_
  • Strikethrough: put a tilde on both sides — ~text~
  • Monospace: put three backticks on both sides — ```text```
  • Inline code: put one backtick on both sides — `text`
  • Quote: start the line with > and a space
  • Bulleted list: start the line with - or * and a space
  • Numbered list: start the line with a number, a full stop and a space — 1. text

Why formatting sometimes doesn't work

  • There must be no space just inside the symbols: *bold* works, * bold * doesn't.
  • Symbols attached to letters on the outside, like word*bold*, may not format.
  • Lists and quotes need the symbol at the very start of the line, followed by a space.
  • Lists, quotes and inline code are newer features, so people on older WhatsApp versions may see the raw symbols.

Using formatting in business messages

A little formatting makes long replies easier to scan: bold the price or date, use a short list for options, and strike through an old price to show a discount. Don't format everything — a message that's all bold is harder to read.

Frequently asked questions

Does WhatsApp support bold and italic text?

Yes. WhatsApp supports bold, italic, strikethrough, monospace, inline code, quotes, and bulleted and numbered lists, using the symbols in the cheat sheet above.

Can I combine styles, like bold and italic?

Yes. Nest the symbols, for example *_bold italic_*. Keep the outer and inner symbols in matching order.

Does this tool change the font?

No. It adds WhatsApp's own formatting symbols, so the text stays searchable and readable by screen readers. It doesn't use decorative Unicode fonts.

Will formatting work in WhatsApp Web?

Yes. The same symbols work on Android, iPhone, WhatsApp Web and the desktop apps.
