How to message a number without saving it

What happens on the other side

Nothing unusual. The chat opens the same way as if you'd saved the number: the other person sees your name or number as they normally would. Nothing is added to your phone's contacts, and you can save the number later from inside the chat if the conversation continues.

If the number isn't registered on WhatsApp, WhatsApp shows a message saying the phone number shared via URL is invalid. Check the country code and try again.

App or WhatsApp Web?

“Open chat in WhatsApp” uses a wa.me link, which hands the chat to the WhatsApp app on phones and to the WhatsApp desktop app or WhatsApp Web on computers. “Open in WhatsApp Web” goes straight to web.whatsapp.com in your browser, which is handy if you work from WhatsApp Web all day.
