The short answer

How to separate customer chats from personal chats on WhatsApp without a second number

Sort the chat list into groups instead of buying a second SIM. With one number, family, friends and customers share one list, and every new message pushes a customer further down. WhatsApp's own lists let you group chats and view one group at a time. On WhatsApp Web, InboxCRM adds custom chat-list tabs and categories, plus pinned chats, so one click shows only the customers you are working on.

Step by step

How to separate customer chats from personal chats without a second number

Two ways to do it. The first needs no extra software.

With WhatsApp alone

  1. 1Create WhatsApp lists such as "Customers", "Suppliers" and "Family".
  2. 2Add each chat to one list as it comes in.
  3. 3During work hours, open the Customers list and work only there.
  4. 4Mute family groups during work hours, so they do not push customers down.

With InboxCRM

  1. 1Create custom chat-list tabs for the groups you work with.
  2. 2Put each chat in a category.
  3. 3Click a tab to see only that group.
  4. 4Pin the customer chats you must answer this week.
Add InboxCRM to Chrome

What this does not do

  • Tabs and categories show in WhatsApp Web in Chrome, not on your phone.
  • InboxCRM runs in desktop Chrome on WhatsApp Web. It does not work in the WhatsApp mobile app.

Common questions

Do I need a WhatsApp Business account for this?

No. InboxCRM works with the account you already use in WhatsApp Web, personal or business.

Will my family see anything different?

No. Tabs and categories only change how the chat list looks on your own screen.

Is a second number ever the better choice?

Yes, if you want customers to stop reaching you after hours, or if several people need to answer. A second number or a team inbox suits that better than sorting one list.
